After a gap of 14 years, the BMW Berlin Marathon (part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors) is returning to national TV in Germany with RTL Group. For the next three years, Cologne-based broadcaster RTL has agreed an exclusive national TV rights package in Germany with event organiser SCC Events.
RTL will be broadcasting the event live for the first time when around 50,000 runners compete in the 50th anniversary of the BMW Berlin Marathon on September 29, 2024. In addition to the live broadcast, various RTL Group channels are planning to accompany the 2024 anniversary event with extensive pre- and post-event coverage.
Inga Leschek, Programme Director at RTL and RTL+, said “The BMW Berlin Marathon is a major sporting event that not only moves the capital, but inspires the whole of Germany. We are therefore delighted to be able to offer another major sporting event a home on RTL and to further expand our sports coverage with reliable partners.”
Jürgen Lock, CEO of SCC Events, said “Realising the coverage with a media group that sees sport as a central component of its growth strategy underlines the international and national significance of the BMW Berlin Marathon as a beacon in the sports landscape.
“We are looking forward to the renewed cooperation with RTL, which will enable our event, which as a founding member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors is one of the world’s top-class events of its kind, to achieve an even greater presence of top-class, mass sports and inclusive sport throughout Germany.”
Lock continued, “We are certain that this cooperation will allow even more people to be inspired by the fascination of the marathon and its positive emotions. We want to motivate people to be more active and we have a great partner in RTL Group to realise this.”
The long-standing partnership with the ‘RTL Spendenmarathon’ – the longest-running charity programme in Germany – will also be continued. Since 2009, the BMW Berlin Marathon has raised donations totalling €822,199 for ‘Stiftung RTL’, which has benefited needy children in charitable institutions in Berlin on a one-to-one basis. In 2024, SCC Events will donate a total of 200 race entries for the 50th BMW Berlin Marathon to the RTL Spendenmarathon.
