Canyon has unveiled a special edition Aeroad CFR Tensor, as a tribute to the successes of its sponsored rider Mathieu van der Poel at Paris-Roubaix in France.
Mathieu van der Poel, who has won two consecutive Paris-Roubaix titles, will race with the Aeroad CFR Tensor this weekend, aiming for a third consecutive victory on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
Canyon notes that the artwork on its limited edition bike showcases the stress impact of the Paris-Roubaix cobblestones on the frame, reflecting the extreme testing the bike undergoes in one of the world’s toughest one-day races.
The Aeroad CFR is Canyon’s flagship aero race bike, developed over 15 years with Paris-Roubaix as a key benchmark. Mathieu van der Poel, known for his love of the race, specifically requested modifications to the bike, including wider tyre clearance for better comfort on the cobbles, a reinforced front fork, and a hermetically sealed headset to keep out debris.
Canyon adds that its engineering team uses Paris-Roubaix as an ultimate testing ground, visiting the race each year to assess its frames before and after the event. The team applies their findings to enhance subsequent iterations of the bike.
Lukas Birr, Design Engineer at Canyon, said “Roubaix is the pinnacle testing ground for a road bike.
“Smooth tarmac does not put a lot of stress on the bike, but the short distance between these really rough, high cobbles creates a very intense ‘excitement’ frequency.
“These big impacts go through the frame one after the other, shaking the bike violently and putting stress through it. This means that things could loosen up over the duration of the race: headset play, clamp connections, and so on. If a bike withstands all of this, it withstands every other use case, for sure.”
Canyon also utilises ‘shaker’ testing tables and simulations to pinpoint the parts of the frame that endure the most stress, helping to ensure the bike is strengthened where it’s needed most.
The Aeroad CFR Tensor features a paint job that highlights the areas of the frame subjected to the greatest impact. The name ‘Tensor’ comes from a simulation test used to measure stress progression, with darker colours on the frame showing the areas of maximum stress.
Canyon Simulation Engineer, Phillip Oppermann, explained “In order to put the carbon fibres in the right directions when we build new frames, we want to understand what’s happening — where the loads are coming from and where the loads are going to.
“This is how the tensor plotting simulation helps us: the arrows on the simulation show whether part of the frame is in compression, or in tension.
“We have structurally optimised the Aeroad to achieve a carbon lay-up that reaches our stiffness targets, while being strong and robust when racing across the Roubaix cobbles.
“Even though the Aeroad is an aero bike, we still want it to be as light as possible, therefore we optimised the carbon layup by looking at the ‘tensor plots’ of our simulations to not only pass the tests but make the layup as efficient as possible so we save weight while maintaining stiffness and strength targets.”
The new bike showcases the wider Canyon Factory Racing (CFR) philosophy, which is Canyon’s advanced development programme.
Lukas Birr added “CFR to me is the mindset of developing the best possible product that we can for the pros to win races.
“To do so, we have to never be satisfied, and always see room for improvement. It’s about developing extra test rigs, going out and actually riding the bike on the cobbles ourselves, and getting our hands dirty in the process.”
Mathieu van der Poel will ride the Aeroad CFR Tensor at the 2025 Paris-Roubaix. Fans can now purchase the same bike used by the elite rider. Available from Thursday, April 10, 2025, the special edition comes with Shimano Dura-Ace wheels, exclusive Canyon Pro decals, and high-performance Pirelli tyres — used by Team Alpecin-Deceuninck.
