British Triathlon has confirmed the appointment of Debbie Clarke as its new Chair, following an extensive external recruitment process. Clarke will take over from current Chair Bill James on July 1, 2025.
Debbie Clarke has extensive governance, commercial and leadership experience. She has led corporate finance teams across multiple institutions and has spent the last eight years in non-executive director positions, including serving as Chair of Triathlon England since March 2020.
“It’s a great privilege to take on the role of Chair at British Triathlon and follow on from the outstanding contribution Bill has made to the sport,” Clarke said.
“I’m really looking forward to leading and guiding the organisation, working with fellow board members and the executive team to build on its successes, while recognising the challenges and complexities ahead.
“As we move into the next Olympic and Paralympic cycle, I’m also honoured to support our World Class Programme and our incredible athletes, as well as the future talent development that’s vital for our sport.”
Clarke first competed in triathlon in 2009 and qualified for the Great Britain Age Group team in 2014. She has since raced at World and European Age Group championships across a range of distances and multisport formats. Alongside her sporting experience, Clarke runs her own consultancy providing strategic advice to boards, and maintains a portfolio of non-executive roles.
“Our greatest challenge – and opportunity – as a sport is to keep evolving, growing, and inspiring the next generation of talent,” Clarke added. “In my role as Chair, I’m looking forward to leading that journey.”
British Triathlon CEO Ruth Daniels said “Debbie brings strong leadership experience from multiple roles, as well as a genuine passion for our sport, and I know she will lead and inspire our continued growth and success.
Outgoing Chair Bill James said “It’s been a pleasure to play a role with British Triathlon. I wish Debbie and the whole organisation all the very best for the future.
“As you might expect, I will remain an advocate and supporter of our athletes and our swim, bike, run community.”
