The Gran Fondo World Championship 2025 is set to take place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on August 24, marking the first time the event will be held in Central Asia. Organised as part of Gran Fondo Kazakhstan, the race weekend is expected to attract around 1,000 international riders.
The event forms part of the Gran Fondo World Tour (GFWT), a series that brings together amateur and elite cyclists to compete on scenic and challenging courses worldwide. Previous editions of the championship have taken place in cities including Oslo (2018), Indianapolis (2019), Andorra (2022), Seorak & Seoul (2023), and Gran Canaria (2024).
Racing in the ‘Apple City’
Gran Fondo Kazakhstan will take cyclists through the Almaty area and surrounding Zhetisu region, known for its varied terrain and mountain views. Participants can expect a mix of hills, climbs, and smooth asphalt descents.
The race will be based at Almaty Arena and will offer two distances: 50km and 100km. The main race is part of a wider week-long programme aimed at international participants, with guided social rides to destinations such as Big Almaty Lake, Medeu, and Kok Tobe.
Non-UCI format targets wider field
Unlike UCI-sanctioned events, the 2025 championship is open to amateur riders without federation constraints. The event organisers note that cyclists from up to 20 countries – including Russia, North America, Asia, and Europe – are expected to compete.
The format aligns with GFWT’s emphasis on inclusive, accessible racing and the promotion of cycling as a lifestyle.
Kazakhstan’s international sporting ambitions
Almaty’s selection reflects Kazakhstan’s growing role as a sporting destination. More than 40 international events are scheduled in the country for 2025, covering Olympic and non-Olympic sports. In addition to cycling, Almaty will host competitions in disciplines as diverse as boxing, climbing, basketball, and figure skating.
