Anti-doping measures will be further intensified at DATEV Challenge Roth on Sunday, July 6, 2025, following an expanded partnership between event organiser TEAMCHALLENGE and the German National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).
Enhanced anti-doping efforts will include the rollout of Dried Blood Spot (DBS) testing; more tests for both professional and age group athletes; and a wider presence for prevention and education onsite and online.
NADA board member Dr Lars Mortsiefer outlined the approach, stating that the Roth event “puts a strong spotlight on anti-doping awareness” and acts as a “lighthouse project” for the sport.
Broader testing for all athlete levels
Roth’s anti-doping strategy includes testing not only professional triathletes but also age groupers – claimed to be a level of control rarely seen in the sport of triathlon.
“Roth’s clear commitment to fair play applies to everyone, regardless of level or placement,” said Dr Mortsiefer.
He added that the exact number of tests will not be revealed for strategic reasons, noting: “Anyone can be tested. The goal is to remain unpredictable.”
New testing method for faster results
Among the updates for 2025 is the addition of Dried Blood Spot testing. The method uses a small device that draws blood from the upper arm in a quicker and less invasive way than traditional sampling.
Dr Mortsiefer described it as “a quick, efficient, and valuable addition” to existing urine and blood testing.
Two dedicated on-site testing areas will be provided – one for traditional testing, and a separate space for DBS. Both are designed to protect athlete privacy.
TEAMCHALLENGE will also supply 10 to 15 trained volunteers to support logistics and ensure NADA has full access to finish line areas.
Education and outreach
In addition to testing, NADA will focus on education and prevention. A NADA booth will be present from Thursday of race week at the Challenge Roth expo, offering resources and guidance on topics including supplements, medication, and anti-doping rules.
The event website also features multilingual guidance under the ‘Stay Clean’ section, with links to anti-doping resources such as the Cologne List and NADAmed.
Longstanding collaboration
Race Director Felix Walchshöfer said the partnership with NADA, which began in 2002, has always been voluntary and rooted in shared values.
“We’re truly grateful for the expanded initiatives leading up to and during the race,” said Walchshöfer. “Our commitment to clean sport, integrity, and fairness is something we deeply believe in.”
Every year, DATEV Challenge Roth welcomes around 3,500 individual competitors and 700 relay teams. All participants must declare they comply with anti-doping regulations from the German Triathlon Union (DTU), NADA and WADA as part of the registration process.
