Challenge Family has announced the addition of Challenge Shanghai to its international triathlon calendar, with the inaugural event scheduled for October 24–25, 2026. The new event marks a strategic expansion for the series into East China, taking place in the Fengxian District along the southern coastline of Shanghai.
The event will be staged in an area recognised as a ‘National Sports and Leisure Sanctuary’. Local officials noted that the partnership supports the region’s Outdoor Sports Paradise initiative, which has seen the development of more than 100km of professional-grade trails and greenways in the district.
Jort Vlam, CEO at Challenge Family, said “For us, Challenge Shanghai represents everything that makes our international series unique – discovering extraordinary locations and creating unforgettable race experiences for athletes. Haiwan Town and Fengxian District offer something truly special: a spectacular coastal environment that most people would never expect to find in a megacity like Shanghai.”
The competition features a 1.9km swim in Bainiao Lake, the largest artificial lake in the Shanghai park system. This is followed by a 90km bike course that connects the sports and ecological zones of Haiwan Town, passing through Luhua Wetland Park and the Hainong Highway district.
The 21km run course is located within the forest park environment, passing landmarks such as Meiyuan, Zhuyuan, and Bird Island. According to the company, the course is designed to combine speed with the natural scenery of the coastal sanctuary.
Challenge Shanghai spokesperson, Weber Liao, said “This significant move goes far beyond holding an international race; it creates a high-profile international platform to fully present the remarkable green development and urban transformation achievements of Fengxian District. As a world-renowned triathlon event, Challenge Shanghai brings top-level racing experience to the heart of Shanghai’s coastal area, perfectly integrating competitive sports with ecological leisure.”
Challenge Shanghai will offer sprint, standard, and middle-distance races. The event serves as a qualifying race for Challenge Family’s The Championship, held annually in Šamorín, Slovakia.
