Forestry England and Runners Need have teamed up to launch the Forest Runner 5k Challenge, a nationwide event across England that encourages runners of all abilities to get active outdoors and experience running in nature.
Taking place from September 7-20, 2026, participants can complete a 5km run through one of England’s forests, a local park or a trail close to home.
By joining the Forestry England Running Club on Strava and completing the challenge, runners will earn a Forest Runner 5k digital badge, receive a free gait analysis session worth £15 at participating Runners Need stores, and be entered into a prize draw.
Rachel Tallon, Active Forests Programme Manager at Forestry England said “Forests are the perfect place to run, with routes and trails for all abilities. Whether you’re taking on your first 5k, returning to running or looking for a new place to explore, the Forest Runner 5k Challenge is a chance to get outdoors, move at your own pace and enjoy the benefits of being active in nature.”
As the official prize partner of Forest Runner 2026, retail chain Runners Need, part of Cotswold Outdoor Group, has joined forces with event organiser Forestry England to inspire and support more people to explore the outdoors.
Participants will have the chance to win a range of prizes, including a top prize of a £500 Runners Need voucher, Forestry England hoodie and t-shirt, and Forestry England National Membership. Two runners-up will each receive £275 Runners Need vouchers and a Forestry England t-shirt.
Participants can also access a 15% discount on Forestry England National Membership using the code available on the official Strava challenge.
