Wahoo Fitness has announced a firmware update for its KICKR HEADWIND smart fan for indoor training, introducing features that allow the device to respond to body temperature and pace.
The update is designed to provide a more responsive experience for indoor training by expanding sensor compatibility and integrating with the company’s latest running hardware.
Based in Atlanta, GA, Wahoo Fitness is a technology company that develops an ecosystem of sensors, indoor trainers, and software for cyclists, runners, and triathletes. The KICKR HEADWIND, originally launched in July 2018, was the first fan designed specifically for the indoor training environment, featuring a ‘Targeted Airflow Pattern’ that mirrors a rider’s body position.
The new firmware enables expanded sensor compatibility via Bluetooth. Beyond indoor cycling, the smart fan can now connect with KICKR RUN, footpod sensors, power meters, and CORE body temperature sensors. It automatically adjusts airflow based on a user’s pace, power zones, or physiological data to deliver cooling during indoor sessions.
A new ‘Adaptive Cooling’ feature allows the fan to process data from multiple connected sensors simultaneously. Users can pair up to five supported sensors at once, such as combining heart rate and power data, or power and body temperature. The system then adjusts cooling in real time based on the intensity of the effort and the subsequent recovery period.
The update also introduces KICKR RUN speed integration. Here, as the KICKR RUN treadmill adjusts belt speed automatically in ‘RunFree Mode’, the KICKR HEADWIND will now simultaneously adapt its airflow to match the runner’s pace.
Gareth Joyce, CEO of Wahoo Fitness, said “At Wahoo, we’re focused on making every workout better for our users. This firmware update is available to all KICKR HEADWIND owners globally, keeping the product fresh and smart, with features that adapt to pace, power, and physiology. We’re committed to creating tools that last, evolve, and continue to add real value to every workout.“
The pairing process has also been updated within the Wahoo App. Users can now manually manage and select specific sensors rather than the system automatically pairing to the strongest available signal, which the company suggests will remove guesswork for athletes with multiple devices in one area.
The KICKR HEADWIND remains priced at US$319.99, £229.99, or €279.99. The updated firmware is available immediately to all existing and future users of the device.
