The IRONMAN Group has released its updated 2026 Global Competition Rules for the IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon Series.
The new regulations, which come into effect on March 2, 2026, include updates to the professional bike draft zone, equipment specifications, and division terminology.
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a 20-metre bicycle draft zone for all professional races. It builds on an announcement earlier this month about IRONMAN’s updated professional draft zone of 20m, marking a change from the longstanding 12m standard.
The 20m zone is measured from the leading edge of the front wheel and extends 20 metres backwards. Professional athletes will now have a maximum of 45 seconds to complete a pass.
While the draft zone for age-group athletes remains at 12 metres, the new rules clarify how amateurs must interact with professional fields.
Age-group athletes are prohibited from ‘slotting in’ between legally spaced professional athletes. They must instead remain 12 metres behind a trailing professional or pass the entire group of professionals. In these instances, age-groupers are also granted 45 seconds to pass each athlete and are forbidden from slipstreaming the trailing professional while initiating a pass.
In other rule changes, the PC/ID Open race division has been renamed as the Para Open division, with ‘Para’ referring to ‘Parallel’. According to the company, this change aims to align with international standards and inclusive classification structures. The division remains non-competitive for the 2026 season, though the organiser intends to develop additional sub-Para classifications in the future. IRONMAN added that this update was developed in collaboration with a working group of Para athletes, guides, and coaches.
Amendments have also been made to equipment and apparel specifications. Items attached to the bike top tube are now limited to a maximum height of 10cm from the top edge of the tube. These items cannot cover or be attached to the headset, and athletes are not permitted to rest any part of their body on them.
Regarding trisuits, the penalty for a disconnected front zipper or exposed shoulders has been reduced. Previously a potential disqualification, these violations will now result in a ‘warning and amend’ instruction. Failure to remedy the issue promptly will result in a 30 or 60 second time penalty, depending on the event format.
In addition to its IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon Series, The IRONMAN Group manages a portfolio that includes the 5150 Triathlon Series, Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series, and the UTMB World Series of trail running. The organisation operates in over 50 countries worldwide.
