Set Up Events, organizer of the Go Tri Sports Hilton Head Triathlon, has confirmed that the event, scheduled for Saturday 19 May 2012, has been cancelled. The sold out Sprint distance event was cancelled following the closure of the Go Tri Sports multisport store in South Carolina last month.
The impact of the store closing may go further than the Hilton Head Triathlon, as Go Tri Sports was also the sponsor of the wider South Carolina Triathlon Series.
A statement from race organizer Set Up Events was issued today:
With the closing of Go Tri Sports during the last month, and with no organization able to step into the role of event host, the 2012 Go Tri Sports Hilton Head Triathlon has been cancelled. Those registering over the last couple of weeks have already been refunded back to their method of payment via PayPal. Those of you registering on or before March 14, 2012 will receive a refund check directly from Go Tri Sports. Full details on this cancellation and other options you will have will be sent to all registered athletes today.
On 21 March, Go Tri Sports issued the following statement on its Facebook page…

On 27 March, the same Facebook page indicated that 2012 races were going ahead. However, as the above statement from Set Up Events indicates, an event host would likely be required to help take the South Carolina Triathlon Series forward in 2012.
