Qualifiers added for 2011 ITU Long Distance Worlds in US

USA Triathlon (USAT) has added two additional qualifying events for Team USA for the 2011 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships that take place on 5 November 2011, in Henderson, Nevada.

The two qualifying events are the April 2011 Wildflower Triathlon and the August 2011 Pigman Long Course Triathlon.

“Due to the effects of inclement weather prior to the 2010 USA Triathlon Long Course Triathlon National Championship in Myrtle Beach the dynamics of the initial qualifying event unfortunately were altered,” said USA Triathlon National Events Director Jeff Dyrek.

“With the world championship taking place on US soil, USA Triathlon wanted to give American athletes another opportunity to qualify for Team USA and represent their country on the world stage.”

Team USA is comprised of age group athletes that represent the US at each ITU World Championship event.

The first additional chance to qualify for the ITU Long Distance Worlds will be at the 30 April 2011, Wildflower Triathlon in Bradley, California, which features a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run.

The Pigman Long Course Triathlon, set for 21 August 2011, in Palo, Iowa, will also feature a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile (half marathon) run.

At both events, the top five finishers in each age group (rolling down to 10th place) will earn a coveted Team USA spot. All spots earned in Myrtle Beach also will be honoured.
