The Vachery Triathlon Festival has set out its stall to become one of the largest triathlons in the UK, by offering a £10,000 pro prize purse for the Vachery Middle Distance Triathlon race. The Surrey-based event, held on the weekend of 21 July, promises to attract a highly competitive professional field. Talented elite racer Joe Skipper has already confirmed he will be racing and will start as one of the favourites.
Whilst the prize purse will no doubt attract a strong field, it is not the only factor attracting athletes of all abilities and experience. The organisers promise a fantastic course that can boast a private spring-fed lake for the swim, closed roads for the 80K bike course (through ‘an area of outstanding beauty’) and a 2-lap road run around closed country lanes.
Race Director Mark Davis said “The Vachery Triathlon is one of the most important races for professionals and elites in the UK and we wanted a prize purse to reflect that. The race is already special, with closed roads and a stunning location and we want to attract the best to race here.”
Davis added, “Of course, it is not just about the elites and we are really pleased that the age-group race can experience the feeling of ‘racing like a pro’; and I know they are going to enjoy covering a course that includes Vachery Pond, iconic Leith Hill and a route that is also used for the Tour of Britain.”
The Vachery Triathlon offers racers a ‘big event feel’ in a stunning location and will welcome over a thousand triathletes over the course of the race weekend in late July. As well as the Middle distance race, there is also an Olympic distance event on the same weekend for those who would rather race fast and furious.
The event promises to offer something for everyone, with on-site camping within the Vachery Estate, an exhibitor’s area featuring the latest in triathlon gear and produce from local suppliers, plus fun activities for all the family who will enjoy the great atmosphere and countryside whilst athletes are out racing.
Athletes can choose to compete in either the Middle (half-iron) or Olympic distance races, either individually or as part of a relay.
On-course nutrition will be supplied by GU Energy.
The Vachery Triathlon Festival is located just outside the picturesque village of Cranleigh in the Surrey Hills, only minutes from London and the motorways, M25, M23 and M3. The organisers are also happy to talk to clubs about arranging special start waves for them to facilitate club championships.
