Hills a plenty at Tri Dynamic Italy Big Week Camp

Tri Dynamic has just returned from its recent Italy Big Week Camp with 9 Endurance Coaching Head Coach, and two-time English Age Group Champion, Will Newbery. The camp took place in Riccione, Italy where Marco Pantani lived and trained on some of the most stunning and challenging terrain in Italy.

The week was designed specifically for faster age group triathletes looking to get in a large training volume ahead of their key summer IM 70.3 and Ironman races. Athletes travelled from all over the UK, Ireland and even Switzerland to attend the camp.

With pre-selection criteria to qualify for the camp, the standard was high – with Kona qualifies and Age Group podium finishers from Challenge UK present, so everyone had to up their game. Over the course of the week athletes racked up an impressive 550km consisting mostly of hills on the bike, 5 open water swims, 3 pool swims plus 6 runs off the bike.

The participants also got to ride a spectacular Individual Time Trial stage up the famous San Marino hill climb in order to help them calculate their FTP. The other highlight of the week was the 18K XTERRA run with local legend Stefano Gregoretti, who has won both the Yukon Arctic Ultra and the 250k Gobi March and is now training to run 70k a day for 20 days across the Patagonian Desert!

PowerBar supported the camp, providing athletes with the much needed sports nutrition to sustain them on the gruelling 6 hour bikes and runs off the bike. As well as racking up over 32 hours of training, the athletes found time to enjoy the delights of the local café culture and of course the excellent local gelato to replace the thousands of calories expended throughout the week.

Commenting on the Tri Dynamic Italy Big Week Camp Will Newbery said ‘We had a fantastic week, got in some quality miles and a lot of climbing. By the end of the week athletes were getting stronger and surprising themselves as a big week dedicated to training without the stresses and strains of work meant they could focus on training and recovering well.

“Everyone left camp stronger and better prepared for their upcoming A races this summer.”

Next up for Tri Dynamic is its Morzine Age Group Tri Camp with Elite Coach Darren Smith, who coaches GB’s World #1 Jodie Stimpson, alongside Lisa Norden and the Dsquad.

This skills focused camp will take place in Morzine from 4-7 July and participants will have the unique opportunity to not only learn from Darren Smith how he coaches his athletes but also to train with and learn from the entire Dsquad – including joining in on their final preparation ahead of the World Triathlon Hamburg event.
