The Sufferfest has joined forces with respected website CyclingTips to create a new style guide for cycling. Elements of Style is billed as the first cycling training video entirely devoted to improving form, posture and efficiency on the bike.
Renowned for producing some of the world’s most addictive and toughest training workouts for cyclists, Elements of Style marks The Sufferfest’s first departure from high-intensity interval videos.
“We love nothing more than to make people suffer,” explained Sufferfest Founder and ‘Chief Sufferlandrian’ David McQuillen. “But suffering alone isn’t enough to be a great cyclist – you also need form and efficiency. You need style. And for that, we turned to our friends at CyclingTips.”
“We created these drills to improve critical aspects of a rider’s form: being efficient, remaining relaxed and engaging the right muscle groups for maximum power,” added Wade Wallace, founder of CyclingTips. “Whether you’re a novice or elite cyclist, we recommend doing this video once a week for a few weeks and then monthly to really lock in great form.”
Over 39 minutes, Elements of Style guides the rider through a series of six specific drills which they’ll later be able to practice on the turbo trainer or stationary bike and then take out onto the road.
The video opens with the exclusive 9-point ‘Systems Check’, a handy mental checklist that cyclists can use on any ride to get into their optimal position. This is followed by drills aimed at increasing body awareness and engaging the core; focusing on a smooth pedal stroke at both high and low cadences; and generating maximum power while climbing, both in and out of the saddle.
McQuillen is careful to emphasise that while Elements of Style does not feature the same degree of suffering as its predecessors, it is a perfect foundation for anyone’s cycling training.
“We guarantee it will change the way you think about your riding style after doing it just once. Do it five times and you’ll automatically adjust your position while out on rides. Do it 10 times and Sufferlandrian angels will burst into tears at the sheer epic beauty of you kicking the crap out of your competition all the while making it look effortless!” promised McQuillen.
Elements of Style was shot on location in Wanaka, New Zealand, and features Wallace together with former elite cyclists Allan Iacuone and Cal Britten. It is narrated by famous cycling commentator Carlton Kirby.
