British pro cyclist Alex Dowsett is back on track for his hour record attempt, which he had to delay due to a broken collar bone earlier this year. He will attempt to break the hour record at 14:00 CEST on Saturday 2 May 2015 at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, dressed in an Endura speed suit specifically developed for this event.
Named ‘The Perfect Hour’, the hour record is the record for the longest distance cycled in one hour. The current record, in accordance with the new unified UCI rules, of 52.491km, is held by the Australian Rohan Dennis and was set on 8 February 2015 at the Velodrome Suisse, Grenchen, Switzerland. Rohan Dennis beat Matthias Brändle’s former record of 51.852km, which had been achieved on 30 October 2014 at the World Cycling Center in Aigle, Switzerland, following Jens Voigt’s former record of 51.110km on 18 September 2014.
Movistar Team’s clothing sponsor Endura has pulled out all the stops to supply the best possible kit to the number one ranked team in the World Tour. Special attention has been given this year to the development and constant improvement of a wind tunnel tested aero speed suit. For this, Endura has partnered up with Simon Smart of Drag2Zero, carrying out extensive work at the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 wind tunnel, utilizing the facility’s high tech equipment to maximise aerodynamic efficiency.
To support Alex’s hour record attempt, Endura is working on a specific suit, optimised for this occasion. The charismatic Essex rider has spent many hours in the wind tunnel testing different versions of this highly evolved piece of kit, which will have a significant impact on the success of this ambitious attempt.
Alex’s new British ten mile record from May 2014, as well as Movistar Team’s outstanding results in various time trials, proved the credentials of the aero kit. For UK cyclists a version of the aero speed suit is available through Endura’s custom programme, which also contains a variety of other pieces developed with the Movistar Team, all available for production in custom team graphics.
For Alex Dowsett the hour record is not all about the record attempt, but his responsibility and wish to inspire children with rare diseases. Suffering from haemophilia himself, Alex is a patron of haemophilia charity LittleBleeders.com.
