Draft legal on the starting grid at Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon

The Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon took place yesterday (Sunday 4 October 2015) at the famous motor racing circuit in Cheshire, UK, featuring a sprint and a standard distance race.

The standard distance race hosted the Triathlon England National Duathlon Championship and attracted a field of elite athletes as well as amateur and novice racers. 281 athletes crossed the finish line in the standard distance race and 179 completed the sprint distance race.

The sprint distance race was the first race in the UK to be run as a draft legal race, in response to the International Triathlon Union (ITU) changing age group sprint races to a draft legal format. According to Xtra Mile Events, organizer of the Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon, ‘this new concept was very well received by the competitors.’

The Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon is held at one of the UK’s finest motor racing circuits and offers many unique features including a mass start on the starting grid, transition in the pits and a traffic free race track. The banked hairpin and the track’s smooth tarmac offer a fast and unique racing experience for all competitors, along with good spectating opportunities.

Race Director Simon Hill said “The Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon, which incorporated the Triathlon England National Duathlon Championship, attracted a large number of athletes and we saw lots of excellent performances on the track. There was a great atmosphere at the finish line, with many athletes celebrating their achievement and the end of their season.

“A lot of competitors had taken part in the Oulton Park Spring Duathlon, and we are proud to give athletes the opportunity to finish their season on a high at this fantastic venue.

He continued, “A big thank you goes to everyone who has been supporting us this season and to all the athletes who signed up to Xtra Mile Events. I would also like to thank the Oulton Park track staff, Xtra Mile Events Crew, Northwich Air Cadets, BTF Race Officials, Manchester Medical Services and Cheshire Constabulary for their help with staging this event.”

Sponsors of the Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon included Race Force, Clif Bar, Jabra, Athlete Matters, ERDINGER Alkoholfrei, Zone 3 and Pro Spin.
