2016 British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series confirmed

Great Britain’s most talented young triathletes can look forward to an exciting season ahead as the schedule for the 2016 British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series is confirmed.

There will be six events in total with each of the Home Nations hosting at least one round of the Series that will see over 300 athletes competing throughout 2016.

2016 British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series events:

  • 3 April – Windsor Duathlon, British Youth and Junior Duathlon Championships, Windsor Great Park
  • 14 May – Sospan Sprint Triathlon, Llanelli
  • 11 June – Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds – British Youth and Junior Aquathlon Championships, Leeds
  • 9 July – Lidl BananaMan Triathlon, Eton Dorney
  • 14 August – Tri Liverpool, British Youth and Junior Triathlon Championships, Liverpool
  • 4 September – British Triathlon U20’s Festival, Strathclyde Country Park

All events will be draft legal and take place on closed roads, with points awarded dependent on finishing position. An athletes’ series ranking position will be calculated using the three best scores added together (one score of which must come from a triathlon). The winner of the British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series will be the athlete with the highest overall score.

Jon Ridgeon, Director for Major and National Events at British Triathlon was delighted to confirm the 2016 series, commenting “This year’s British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series has a great mix of events that will provide some exciting racing for Britain’s most talented young triathletes.

“The series has grown in popularity over the past few years and we are looking forward to a schedule that hosts some new races in 2016 and presents the chance for competitors to race on the same stage as the world’s best at the Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds.”

Brendan Purcell, Performance Director at British Triathlon added “The British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series is a key part of British Triathlon’s strategy to develop the world-class triathletes of the future, with a number of triathletes on the UK Sport funded World-Class Performance Programme having competed in the series in the past.

“The events deliver a world-class stage for triathletes to race upon and nurture the skills and tactical abilities required to be successful at the next level.”

This season Human Race will also be providing additional elite draft legal racing opportunities for young triathletes during 2016:

  • 26 July – SteelMan Triathlon, Eton Dorney
  • 13 August – Supertri Children’s Youth & Junior Open Water Triathlon, Eton Dorney

Nick Rusling of Human Race said “Having been involved with triathlon for 26 years at Human Race, we’ve seen the sport develop considerably. However, the area that needs the most nurture and attention is kids and teens so we are delighted to be involved in developing their opportunities to take part, have a go and compete.”
