Portocolom is gearing up to host a raft of international triathletes in Mallorca, Spain, during the weekend of 9-10 April. The event kicks off with the TriKids Duathlon for boys and girls between 7 and 16 years on Saturday 9 April, the day before the main Portocolom Triathlon takes place.
The organizing team notes that, in recent years, the TriKids Duathlon has become ‘the race with the highest number of young participants on the Balearic Islands.’
Throughout the weekend, Portocolom will be a central point for athletes on the island. The races are organized by the Triathlon Club Portocolom in collaboration with the organizers of the Triathlon of Portocolom (Kumulus). This year more children will participate in the competition as a foretaste of the adult´s race the following day.
Some of the pros competing on Sunday will be supporters for the little ones on Saturday. The TriKids Duathlon is supported by the Balearic Triathlon Federation and more than 200 future triathletes are expected to race next month.
The Triathlon Portocolom on 10 April 2016 is one of the earliest triathlons of the season in Europe. It takes place for the 18th time in 2016 and offers the two race formats 111 (1K swim, 100K bike and 10K run) and the half distance 55.5 event.
Both races over 111K and 55.5K will take athletes on the same courses as in 2015. 111K participants will do two loops of each segment while 55.5K athletes will complete only one leg. The swim will take place in Portocolom’s harbour; the bike loop will take them along a rolling course including the climb of Sant Salvador, well known by thousands of triathletes and cyclists who visit Mallorca each year.
The run will take athletes from the old town along the beaches of Portocolom Bay before they cross the finish line. 800 triathletes from 20 countries enjoyed this ‘demanding and fun triathlon event’ in 2015. Once again, in 2016 there will be a special prize for King/Queen of the mountain for the Sant Salvador climb.
