IRONMAN has announced that general registration for the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Xiamen has sold out. The new event is scheduled to take place on 13 November 2016 in the port city of Xiamen, on China’s southeast coast.
The hitting of capacity on IRONMAN 70.3 Xiamen is welcome news for IRONMAN, as it seeks to expand into the burgeoning Chinese market.
Previously in Jixian, Tianjin, in 2011 IRONMAN had to cancel the 2011 IRONMAN China and IRONMAN 70.3 China races following challenges in obtaining necessary race permits.
The return of IRONMAN to China looks set to mark a turning point for the M-Dot brand, particularly in Asia, following its ownership by China’s Dalian Wanda Group, and the integration of Wanda Group’s Infront Sports & Media business unit and IRONMAN into a newly formed entity named Wanda Sports Holding.
IRONMAN 70.3 Xiamen event takes place in a picturesque resort town on China’s southeast coast, and will welcome more than 2000 athletes, including 500 international athletes. According to IRONMAN, the sell out is testament to the growth of the sport in China.
For athletes who want a chance to race this unique event – and compete for one of the 40 IRONMAN World Championship 2017 slots – limited entries are available through IRONMAN’s special Wanda Travel Packages.
Alternatively, athletes are encouraged to seize the opportunity to race in China this year and grab a spot at IRONMAN 70.3 Hefei, which has a limited number of openings still available. This race takes place in the iconic capital of the Anhui Province of Hefei. IRONMAN 70.3 Hefei offers 50 slots to the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
