Billed as ‘the official kick-off of the European triathlon season’, Triathlon Portocolom in Mallorca, Spain, has a date set for Sunday 9 April 2017. As one of the earliest triathlon races of the European season, next year’s event celebrates its 20th edition.
The event starts with a swim in the bay of Portocolom, followed by a challenging bike course with its double climb uphill to Sant Salvador, and finishing with a picturesque running course across the historical town centre towards Portocolom’s emblematic lighthouse.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary some new features are currently under preparation, soon to be announced. Again there will be monetary prizes of €4,000 for the winners, the first three classified (male and female) in the 55.5K and 111K distance formats.
As in previous years, the organising team expect a number of international professional triathletes to kick off their triathlon season next year in Portocolom, in both the male and female categories.
In addition, the popular duathlon for children, TriKids, will take place on 8 April, the day before the main race gets started. Early bird rates for registration are available until 31 December 2016. Members of the Triathlon Federation of the Balearic Islands will also have preferential member rates.
The Triathlon Portocolom International is organized by the sports events agency Kumulus and the Club Triatló Portocolom; and is supported by the local council of Felanitx, the Ayuntamiento de Felanitx.
Both races over 111K and 55.5K will take athletes on the same courses as in 2016 and 2015. 111K participants will do two loops of each segment while 55.5K athletes will complete only one leg. The swim will take place in Portocolom’s harbour; the bike loop will take them along a rolling course including the climb of Sant Salvador, well known by thousands of triathletes and cyclists who visit Mallorca each year. The run will take athletes from the old town along the beaches of Portocolom Bay before they cross the finish line.
