The Wattbike No Excuses Sportive Series opens for business this week – and is billed as a unique series of sportives in the UK because the majority of riders ride for free. The series consists of three sportive events in Cambridge, Nottingham and Scotland and the concept is fairly simple…
Cycle event firm UK Cycling Events gives away free spaces on these rides. All participants need to do is book, turn up and ride. If riders do so they are given 100% of the entry fee back after the event. If they do not turn up… for whatever the reason, this is called ‘NO EXCUSES’ and the event organiser will then give 90% of the entry fee to a chosen charity (the chosen charity will be announced soon).
- Sunday 26 February: Cambridge | Peterborough Show Ground
- Sunday 5 March: Nottingham | Southwell Racecourse
- Sunday 26 March: Scotland | Falkirk Football Club
Those who want to secure an entry spot are advised to be quick due to a limited number of spaces. For those who are still unsure whether they will be able to make it, there’s also a half price option: ‘half an excuse’, which costs just £17.50. However there are no refunds given on these tickets.
Natalie Hicks, Head of UK Cycling Events, said “These will be hugely popular sell out events designed to support great causes and encourage riders back on their bikes after the winter season.”
A release from UK Cycling Events continued, ‘All three events will have epic and standard route options, are extremely well signed and will be fully supported with mechanics, medics and marshals, as well as fully stocked feed stations and finisher medals.’
Wattbike Director, Rich Baker, said “An early-season sportive is great way to build strength and endurance for the 2017 season, but the tricky bit is getting prepared. Structured training on the Wattbike throughout winter will really give you that edge.
“Performance matters to us, and we want riders to continue to improve, whatever their standard. Using the Wattbike, our training plans and sessions, we can help you ride faster during the Wattbike No Excuses Series and throughout 2017.”
The Wattbike is billed as a truly unique indoor training tool. Endorsed by the UCI World Cycling Centre, the Wattbike measures over 40 cycling parameters including watts, cadence and heart rate. The Wattbike’s unique design allows the user to replicate the exact geometry of their own bike to ensure a perfect bike-fit.
As the company points out, the Wattbike feels and rides like a real bike and can recreate any required resistance through the dual air and magnetic resistance system.
The Wattbike is also one of the first indoor training bikes to show riders pedalling technique. The in-built performance monitor shows the ‘ground-breaking Polar Display’, which allows riders to see in real time how they are applying power throughout the pedal stroke.
