The Swakopmund triathlon, formerly the FNB Desert Triathlon and now branded as FNB Sandman, is being held for the 30th year, will take place this Sunday 4 Dec at the Mole in Swakopmund, Namibia. The African event is reporting participation numbers that are ‘well over 300 making it the largest field in the last 10 years, possibly more.’
The ‘Ultra’ event consists of a 1.9km swim, followed by a 90km cycle and then 21.1km run. The Standard distance (1km/40km/10km) men’s division will be fiercely competitive among local and travelling athletes. Participants can also choose the Sprint distance (450m/20km/3km) and Mini distance (150m/7km/3km).
Race organiser Yvonne Brinkmann from OTB Sport said, “We are thrilled with the high turnout for the 2016 event. We have a number of SA’s, Zimbabweans and internationals competing, so it will be an exiting race.” She mentioned that the 2016 bike route had been altered and participants would cycle towards Henties Bay, a coastal city in western Namibia.
