With 2481m of altitude, 22.3 km of length and a maximum gradient of 14%, the Colle Fauniera is the main mountain of the La Fausto Coppi Officine Mattio, the international granfondo in Italy, which will start from Cuneo in northwestern Italy on July 8th, 2018.
Whether riders decide to choose the longest route (177km distance – 4125m altitude) or the Mediofondo (111km – 2550m) the Colle Fauniera waits for all participants with its uphill, classified as ‘long and challenging’, and its downhill, considered as one of the most technical within the Alps.
Featuring in the Giro d’Italia, in 1999, during the Bra – Borgo San Dalmazzo stage, the Colle Fauniera saw the victory of Paolo Savoldelli, who was later nicknamed as ‘Il Falco’ (The Hawk). In the same stage, Marco Pantani put on a spur uphill and conquered the Maglia Rosa.
The organising team reports that registrations for La Fausto Coppi Officine Mattio on July, 8th ‘continue at a fast pace’. Athletes of 27 different nations are reportedly registered, including entrants from as far afield as Chile. (The Consul General of Chile will be in Cuneo in July to welcome all 20+ South American athletes currently registered to be making the journey to Italy.)
Registrations for the La Fausto Coppi Officine Mattio granfondo will be closed this year upon reaching the entry limit of 2600 participants. The registration fee is €55 (until July 6th, 2018) or when the race capacity number is reached.
