The long-distance Mallorca 140.6 Triathlon is heading back to the Balearic Islands, Spain, on October 24th. The event team reports that it has 500 athletes already registered, and is presenting its official ambassadors eight months before the gun goes off.
Eleven pro athletes are the official international Mallorca 140.6 Triathlon ambassadors and will help to spread the word and show their commitment to the goals of the race… ‘back to the origins of the triathlon, no drafting and no overcrowding in a stunning course.’
The Mallorca 140.6 Triathlon will be hosted in Playa de Muro (Alcudia Bay) on October 24th. There is prize money of €10,000 for pro athletes shared among the male and female category. The eleven ambassadors from different backgrounds and levels will represent the race in their countries and communities.
‘Local heroes’ Joan Nadal, Carlos Lopez and Miguel Angel Fidalgo are the first Spanish ambassadors. All of them are well-known pro triathletes locally and are strongly supporting the event. Carlos Lopez won the 2016 IRONMAN Mallorca, Joan Nadal was second in 2019 at Challenge Madrid and Fidalgo has been Spanish Middle Distance Champion and second at IRONMAN Mallorca 2014, amongst other achievements.
The international female ambassadors are Marion Tuin and Claudia Striekwold (Netherlands), Lisa-Maria Dornauer (Austria) and Caroline Livesey (Great Britain). Kacper Adam (Poland), Petr Vabrousek (Czech Republic), Kasper Laumann Hartlev (Denmark) and Mark Livesey (Great Britain) are the European male ambassadors. All of them usually train and compete in the Balearics.
The event also aims to become an international benchmark in drafting control on the bike course. The organisers add that a series of very strict measures will be in place to avoid illegal drafting and cycling in a peloton.
‘A high number of officials and referees will be scattered around the course throughout the competition to guarantee that each and every participant will ride the 180km without cycling in the slipstream of another.’
Among other event news that will be released over the coming months, the organisers have disclosed that there will be a ‘Vintage’ category for triathletes who participate with equipment from the 80s and 90s.
