On Sunday, August 15, approximately 1,600 athletes took the plunge into warmer than normal water (63ºF / 17ºC) to compete in the 40th anniversary Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

A summary video, from videographer Morgan Schmidt-Feng, summarises the event – with Bay Area mist, the boat trip to Alcatraz and the iconic race start where athletes leap from the boat into the water.

Olympian Ben Kanute and Emma Pallant-Browne took first place honours in the men and women’s pro division. This bucket list race features a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shore, an 18-mile bike ride and an eight-mile run through San Francisco.
