On the morning of Sunday, January 24th, thousands of runners braved the cold weather participating in the NYRR Fred Lebow Half-Marathon in Central Park. The event honours the late New York Road Runners (NYRR) President and New York City Marathon co-founder, Fred Lebow (1932-1994).
To mark the day, Ezra Feig, a cousin of Fred Lebow, was among the participants. In remembrance of Fred Lebow, Feig served as a special guest of the event by starting the race horn.
The mid-winter race features a multiple-loop course around Central Park and celebrates the marathon’s original course that was run entirely in the park before expanding to the five boroughs in 1976.
The race serves as NYRR’s first half marathon, which was initiated in 1973. In 2014, it was named the Fred Lebow Manhattan Half, and then later named Fred Lebow Half in 2019.
