Scheduled to be held on June 18-19, 2022, Family Triathlon Keszthely in Hungary is getting set to host the Hungarian Championships in middle distance triathlon (1.9km / 90km / 21.1km).
Family Triathlon Keszthely is based in Keszthely, a town perched at the western edge of Lake Balaton, on the shore of one of the biggest lakes in Central Europe. Due to its location and accessibility by both road and rail, Keszthely and the surrounding area is a popular holiday destination.
The race is situated next to the city beach in front of Hotel Hullám and Hotel Balaton. The start and finish of the swim leg are both found on the premises of the Keszthely Városi Strand (City Beach). The one loop swim in Lake Balaton has a water temperature of around 16-24°C.
The cycling leg has two loops with an elevation gain of 550m. Within the duration of the race’s time limits, the organizers limit traffic on the cycling course. Athletes are led and escorted by motorcyclists throughout the course.
The run has five loops (21.1km) going from the transition zone at Keszthely Városi Strand with views of historical city buildings heading towards the Festetics Palace, the third biggest and the most visited palace of Hungary.
“All these years we have been working hard try to create something new for all our triathletes,” said Race Director Gábor Viczián from the organising company 575 Team.
“The new name of the competition is Keszthely Family Triathlon and more emphasis is placed on junior triathletes, and we changed the weekend of the competition a bit. We are thrilled to be bringing again the national Hungarian championships in middle distance triathlon to this iconic venue that is worth showing to the world.
“We are confident that our athletes who are returning every year and new ones will have the best triathlon experience at Keszthely Városi beach in mid June. There will be shorter distances on Saturday and the main race, the middle distance Hungarian National Championship will take place on Sunday.”
The number of competitors at the 575 Keszthely Triathlon last year exceeded 1000 triathletes. The organizers want to surpass last year’s field headcount.
Keszthely is easily accessible by car from both Budapest, the capital of Hungary, and Vienna, the capital of Austria. The nearest airport is at Sarmellek approximately 10 km south of the city and this is served by a number of regional airlines.
The city also enjoys the proximity of Hévíz, a town noted for its spa and wellbeing services. Keszthely is also close to northern Balaton wine regions which are known to produce high quality white wines from locally cultivated varieties.
