Endurance hiking brand HIGHLANDER partners with Dirt Charity on climate mission

HIGHLANDER, billed as the world’s first global long-distance hiking event series, has joined forces with DIRT, a climate charity working to ‘turn fashion into a climate solution’.

Founded in Croatia in 2017 when a couple of enthusiasts decided to share their love and passion for long-distance hiking, HIGHLANDER has grown to become an international long-distance hiking event series. It now hosts more than 30 events across 25 different countries, all with the mission of… ‘helping people to immerse themselves in the great outdoors, think about their overall health, both physical and mental, and make more conscious decisions to adjust their actions in order to preserve the Earth.’

Abiding by ‘Leave No Trace’ and ‘Erase the Trace’ philosophies, HIGHLANDER has sustainability at the forefront of all events by providing education for its participants on how to effectively preserve nature.

Aiming to take this one step further, the new partnership with DIRT will see HIGHLANDER donate £1 for each kilometre of its Hercules format, a 94-kilometre trek over five days. Funds will be used by DIRT to regenerate soil in areas impacted by climate change.

Founded by renowned American model turned climate activist and sustainability consultant, Arizona Muse, DIRT is an independent charity. Its mission is to grow and process fashion’s raw materials in a way that doesn’t cause harm to the planet through Demeter biodynamic farming.

Demeter is a quality mark for produce that has been grown biodynamically and for the products that use both Demeter produce and approved processes.

Named after the Greek goddess of agriculture, the Demeter quality mark certifies products with a core focus on organic growing. Biodynamic farming is seen as one of the most sustainable and regenerative forms of agriculture. By getting involved in soil regeneration, DIRT in turn supports the biodynamic farming movement.

DIRT Founder and Trustee, Arizona Muse said “This partnership between DIRT Charity and HIGHLANDER is really meaningful because they share a mission of humanity living a life closer to nature, becoming nature again, as we used to be.

“With the donation from Highlander, DIRT continues to support the Demeter biodynamic farming movement to regenerate soil.”

She continued, “Soil regeneration is one of the most important actions to be taken in the face of climate change, and Demeter biodynamics is a powerful nature-based solution which will be vital in helping us achieve our goal of getting fashion’s sourcing power behind soil regeneration globally. That’s why I’m happy that the donation will go towards growing the Demeter biodynamic farming movement.”

HIGHLANDER CEO, Jurica Barac, said “It’s amazing to see what Arizona Muse managed to do with her team and to see the direction in which she directed their focus.

“We are beyond proud to be able to be a part of this story, and are thrilled to be building upon our sustainability initiatives via this partnership with DIRT, a truly fantastic initiative which is leading the way in growing fashion crops in a way that heals soil and restores nature to total health and thriving biodiversity.”
