On Saturday, October 26th, many of the world’s top male triathletes had the world watching as they swam, biked and ran across the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship course in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i.
Nearly 2,400 athletes took to the Big Island of Hawai’i to compete in the IRONMAN World Championship. Among an elite field of 54 male professionals, Patrick Lange (DEU) broke the tape with a new course best time of 7:35:53 and was crowned the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Champion, taking home US$125,000 in prize money.
Magnus Ditlev (DNK) and Rudy Von Berg (USA) completed the podium, the Dane finishing nearly eight minutes behind Lange in 7:43:39, still good for one of the fastest finish times ever in Kona. Meanwhile Von Berg crossed the Ali`i Drive finish line in 7:46:00 the fastest time ever for an American at the IRONMAN World Championship.
The day saw not only the best triathletes from around the world compete, but was the culmination of some inspiring athlete journeys.
From Billy Monger, a former racing car driver who at the age of 17 was involved in a devastating crash that resulted in the amputation of both his legs, to special teams in Team Agar and the Pease Brothers, to running icon and Boston Marathon Race Director Dave McGillivray, and Jonathan Pascual who continues to persevere through a terminal cancer diagnosis, every person had their own unique story to tell.
