Shimano Europe has launched a new initiative to address an urgent shortage of skilled bicycle mechanics across Europe. This has been impacted by increasing demand for repair and maintenance services that has outpaced supply, and is amidst a growth of e-bikes, cargo bikes and urban mobility trends.
The campaign, titled ‘Nextgen Mechanics: Advancing Cycle Mechanic Standards & Careers Together’, is a Europe-wide call for evidence that will remain open until July 25, 2025. It invites input from across the cycling ecosystem – including mechanics, industry representatives, city governments, training providers and NGOs.
According to Shimano Europe, the bicycle mechanic shortage is being driven not only by rising demand, but also by a growing skills crisis. Experienced mechanics are said to be leaving the industry and are often replaced by individuals without formal training or certification.
Ties van Dijk, Advocacy Specialist at Shimano Europe, stated that the shortage is “critical and worsening,” adding, “Their expertise is essential to every business model that keeps bicycles on the road – from independent shops to large-scale leasing fleets.
“Without them, we risk creating serious barriers for people who want to start or continue cycling.”
Van Dijk added that the initiative cannot be solved by any one company, and that Shimano is working closely with Cycling Industries Europe to build a broad coalition of stakeholders. Insights gathered will inform a report to be released at the at the Cycling Industries Europe (CIE) Summit in October 2025.
