Zwift has launched a major expansion to its New York City virtual map, adding 31km of new virtual routes, marking the platform’s biggest map expansion in five years.
The new area is now accessible to all users, coinciding with Stage 4 of the ‘Zwift Unlocked’ event series.
While the existing New York map is set 100 years in the future with futuristic glass sky roads around Central Park, this expansion takes Zwifters outside Manhattan, through Times Square, over the Brooklyn Bridge, and into Prospect Park. In contrast to the challenging climbs of Central Park, the new routes feature faster, more rolling roads.
The new map expansion also introduces a new take on the platform’s Timed Sprint Segments, called Power Segments. Located within the New York Subway, these segments focus solely on raw watts output for a specified duration.
- Objective: Hold maximum power for the required time
- Display: A glowing start arch initiates the segment, and the Heads-Up Display (HUD) shows the athlete’s average wattage alongside their historic 90-day and 1-year power bests
- Focus: There are six new Power Segments designed to help athletes train and test their 5, 10, and 20-second peak power
Jerseys are on offer for top power outputs, though Zwift emphasises that personal improvement is the main aim.
At launch, 15 new routes are immediately available to explore, with an additional five routes to be unlocked over the coming months.
The 12 new Ride routes include:
- ‘Watts the Limit’ – 31km; 219m elevation
- ‘Double Span Spin’ – 12.6km; 120m elevation
- ‘Prospect Park Loop’ – 5.5km; 37m elevation
- ‘Double Parked’ – 42.4km; 330m elevation
- ‘Fuhgeddaboutit’ – 79km; 838m elevation
- ‘Spinfinity Ultra’ – 35km; 291m elevation
The new Run routes include ‘Prospect Park Loop Run’ (5.5km; 37m elevation) and ‘Toefield Tornado Run’ (10.3km; 53m elevation).
Stage 4 of ‘Zwift Unlocked’ offers the first event experience on the new map expansion, providing users with the chance to earn double XP.
