George Hincapie, one of America’s most successful and esteemed cyclists, has partnered with Road ID, the premier manufacturer of identification products for endurance athletes, to serve as a Brand Ambassador.
The partnership with the Erlanger, Kentucky-based company also extends to the South Carolina-based Hincapie Development Cycling Team that supports nine outstanding U23 riders in the US.
Hincapie, a New York native, now races for the BMC Racing Team on the UCI ProTour. The winner of the 2007 Tour of Missouri, Hincapie is also a five-time Olympian, a three-time USA Professional Road Race Champion and won Stage 15 of the 2005 Tour de France, in addition to his multiple Team Time Trial stage victories in that race.
Still a dominating rider at 37, Hincapie has fifteen Tour de France appearances under his belt and this summer plans on lining up for his sixteenth – which would tie him for the most-ever in Tour history. During those 15 appearances at Le Tour, Hincapie rode alongside Lance Armstrong as chief domestique throughout his unprecedented reign of seven Tour de France victories.
“Road ID isn’t just an essential piece of equipment that puts my wife and kids at ease while I’m out training,” noted Hincapie,
“At this stage of my career, my role is increasingly geared toward mentoring my teammates and younger competitors, and I hope to lead by example on issues of proper safety and preparation. I couldn’t be happier to have this great partner for myself and the Hincapie Development Team.”
Hincapie joins an elite list of athletes who serve as Brand Ambassadors for Road ID, including two-time Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander, famed ultra-runner Dean Karnazes, cyclist Levi Leipheimer, and former cyclist-turned-commentator Bob Roll.
Edward Wimmer, co-founder of Road ID said, “As an American cycling icon and a father of two kids, George is an ideal ambassador for Road ID. He has had his share of accidents and understands the vital importance that wearing identification can make in an emergency situation.
“He is a tremendous advocate for the sport of cycling and we look forward to working with him and the Hincapie Development Team.”
Road ID’s line of customized IDs is an integral part of any active person’s gear and can be worn on the wrist, shoe, ankle, or around the neck. Each Road ID is designed to give medically trained first responders the information they need to immediately contact family members, access medical information and prevent serious delays in case of injury.
In addition to the athletes serving as Brand Ambassadors, Road ID also provides personal identification products to the Versus television crew that commentates on many of Hincapie’s races: Phil Liggett, Paul Sherwen, Robbie Ventura and Craig Hummer.
