The gruelling 2011 Samui Triathlon has been postponed. In an open letter to sponsors, competitors and tourists planning to hit the Thai resort of Koh Samui later this month, Ramnate Chaikwang, President of the Samui Triathlon 2011 Organising Committee explained the reason for the event organisers’ decision.
“Unexpectedly, Koh Samui has confronted natural disaster from incessant rain and strong wind since the past week that caused flood, severe mud spread and landslides in several major areas of Koh Samui.
“Most of facilities and infrastructure on the island, at present, is not in a perfect condition for the organization of Samui Triathlon 2011 and it may cause an inconvenience to visitors to the island as well as athletes who will participate the event.
"Safety reason is another major issue that we are seriously concerned. We, consequently, have decided to postpone the event ‘Samui Triathlon 2011’ for a certain time."
A new date for the event has yet to be set. With an originally planned kick-off on 24 April, competitors would have been tasked with swimming 4K, cycling around the island one and a half times – a combined distance of 122K – followed by a 30K run.
Once back up and running – starting from Bophut Beach, the course will give athletes and fans the opportunity to see some of the sights of Koh Samui, including the Lamai Temple and the communities of Bang Kao, Taling Ngam and Maenam.
