Star Events, the company behind the international TriStar triathlon series has unveiled its ‘first international team’. To represent the UK, a team of 15 athletes has been put together to form TriStar GB. The team, which features representatives from TFN-sponsored squad One Triathlon RDS, will debut at TriStar’s inaugural UK event at Milton Keynes on 29 July 2012.
The Milton Keynes race this July represents TriStar’s much awaited entrance into the UK triathlon market and serves as a precursor to the London 2012 Olympic triathlon, which takes place in Hyde Park in central London just 10 days later.
The TriStar events team has scheduled ambitious growth plans for the UK, with the aim of five races in the country for 2013. Team TriStar GB will follow the Milton Keynes event by racing at TriStar Monaco, before finishing off the season with a team time trial in Madrid, as part of TriStar’s new T5 team format.
One Triathlon RDS is a London based club made up of 70 athletes, with 34 of those having already represented Team GB as age group athletes across varying triathlon distances. The unique TriStar111 race distance (1K swim / 100K bike / 10K run) gives the athletes an opportunity to put their short course run speed to the test alongside the longer course cycling format.
One of the key athletes to look out for in the TriStar Team GB team is Team Captain, Tom Babbington; as the most experienced long course athlete in the squad he is well placed to lead from the front (where he hopes he will stay!).
The TriStar Team GB team is made up of a number of strong age group triathletes and also includes: ‘The Young Upstart’, Sam Village who is only in his second year of triathlon; ‘Mr Miles’, Troy Squires, who comes into the squad in the middle of a big season of long course racing; the Ladies Captain, Lil Houghton, a key female athlete at One Triathlon RDS club; ‘Miss Universe’, Felicity Cole, another second year triathlete; and ‘Mrs Macca’ Sam McClary who fits in a 60 hour a week job around her training!
