British Triathlon shortlisted for Sport Governing Body of the Year

British Triathlon has been unveiled by the Sports Industry Group as one of six governing bodies on the Official Shortlist for the Sport Governing Body of the Year Award, sponsored by the Daily Telegraph, completing the shortlist line-up for the Sport Industry Awards 2012.

In what has been another memorable year where British Triathlon has celebrated 13 world champions, the shortlist was based on British Triathlon’s delivery across four key pillars of governance – Performance, Leadership, Community and Ethics.

British Triathlon, which won the award in 2010, will be profiled alongside each of the shortlisted governing bodies in the Daily Telegraph on a weekly basis over the next six weeks, before the winning organisation is announced at the star-studded Sport Industry Awards ceremony on Wednesday 2 May.

The six organisations shortlisted for the Sport Governing Body of the Year Award, sponsored by the Daily Telegraph, are:

  • British Cycling
  • British Triathlon
  • ECB
  • England Netball
  • Rugby Football League
  • UKA

Nick Keller, Chairman of the Sport Industry Group, said “The decision to partner with the Daily Telegraph was taken with the aim of elevating this already prestigious award to a whole new level, and the quality of entries received is proof of how successfully that goal has been achieved.

“A number of governing bodies the world over have had their ethics and leadership questioned in recent years, but every organisation that entered this year’s Sport Governing Body of the Year Award can point proudly to fantastic efforts at transparency and leadership.

“The six governing bodies who have been shortlisted for the award can confidently state that they are the best of a strong group of bodies in this country whose performance, achievements and strategic planning bode well for the future of British sport in this summer’s Olympic Games and beyond.”

Dr Sarah Springman CBE, British Triathlon President added “We are delighted that British Triathlon has been named on the Sport Industry Group’s official shortlist once again. Comparing our performance in 2011 as a fast growing, dynamic and modern Olympic sport against our ambitious quadrennial strategic plan, we can confidently say that we have focused on excellence in terms of ‘Performance, Leadership, Community and Ethics’ and have achieved success in all areas.

“We have celebrated victories at world level on the field of play, won the bid to host the 2013 ITU Triathlon World Championship Grand Final, and promoted our sport to the British public and media at elite and community level through innovative and inclusive events. With London 2012 on the horizon, this is another great boost to our preparations.”

The nomination follows the unveiling of the Dextro Energy Triathlon presented by Tata Steel on the Sport Industry Awards Official Shortlist for ‘Sport Participation Event of the Year’ and British Triathlon’s Elite Team Partner, GE being shortlisted for ‘Best Sponsorship of a Sports Team or Individual’ after its promotion of the GE Great Britain Triathlon Team.
