Kitzbühel is bidding to host the European Triathlon Championships in 2014, according to local media reports, which could see the ‘City of Sports’ in Tyrol, Austria, exiting the ITU World Cup Series.
“There are three or four rival candidates,” ÖTRV Secretary General Herwig Grabner is quoted as saying in an interview with APA (Austria Press Agency). If a contract award to hold a European Championships is awarded this June, 2013 could be the last year that Kitzbühel hosts a World Cup race.
ÖTRV has stepped in as a potential race organizer for the event, after a local club bowed out. Kitzbühel is seen as a strong venue due to its challenging bike course and strong support from the local community.
