The overall economic benefit from staging the age group and elite racing at the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final is predicted to be up to £10 million.
The organisers note significant spending on travel, hotels, restaurants etc., by the 8500 athletes from over 80 countries. Many overseas visitors landed in the UK often with friends and family. In addition, tens of thousands of fans and spectators provided a further significant boost to the economy.
The cost of staging the event is estimated to be £2 million.
The huge festival of sport formed part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series, which aims to bring 70 of the world’s most prestigious sporting events to the UK in legacy from London 2012. It is one of many events coming to London in the near future including the Tour de France (on 7 July 2014), 2015 Rugby World Cup, 2016 LEN European Swimming Champs and 2017 IAAF athletics champs – to name but a few.
Iain Edmondson, Head of Major Events at London and Partners, the city’s official promotional organisation, said “The triathlon is another world class sporting event in the capital and has provided a great spectacle for all the tens of thousands of fans who have come to cheer on the athletes. It’s another excellent example of building on the legacy of the 2012 Olympics.”
