Entries for Cairns Airport Ironman Cairns, which takes place on 9 June 2013, have now closed. Situated at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns Airport Ironman Cairns is set in one of the world’s most iconic tropical locations and boasts a stunning backdrop for athletes and spectators alike.
Hot on the heels of its acquisition of USM Events in February 2012, Ironman brand owner World Triathlon Corp (WTC) added Ironman Cairns to its 2012 line-up. In response, WTC’s main long distance tri rival Challenge Family terminated its agreement with USM Events to deliver Challenge Cairns. This followed what it called a ‘breach of contract’ by the Australian event organiser.
At the time, Felix Walchshöfer, Challenge Family CEO, cited the prior contractual relationship with USM. He noted that the new ownership structure of USM Events (under the Ironman/WTC banner) did not allow Challenge Cairns to continue under USM’s management.
Challenge Family has this week stated that another new event in its expanding international series will soon be announced. A new destination in Asia Pacific may add to the roster of new Challenge Family events in Thailand and Taiwan. Although, it’s a big world out there and time will tell where Challenge is next looking to put down roots!
Long distance Kiwis!
Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand is now the only full-distance IM branded race in the Asia-Pacific region that remains open for registration. There are currently a limited number of slots still available for this event, which takes place on 2 March 2013.
As Ironman brand owner World Triathlon Corp (WTC) notes, destination racing doesn’t get much better than the iconic race in Taupo, New Zealand, thanks to the scenery, hospitality and pure Kiwi spirit. The event attracts over 2,000 volunteers from a population of just 22,000 – the rest are on the streets cheering athletes on.
