John Lunt, founder of Human Race, ‘the UK’s largest mass participation event company’, has decided to move on from the company he set up in 1991 to explore new challenges and set up a multisport consultancy business.
John is one of the most influential figures behind the growth and popularity of triathlon in the UK and has gained international respect in the sport – having recently delivered the London 2012 Olympic triathlon as Race Director.
Lunt grew Human Race from a handful of events in 1991 and created the Windsor Triathlon, The Ballbuster, Hampton Court Swim, Kingston Breakfast Run, to well over 40 events in triathlon, running and open water swimming for 1,000s of adults and kids.
In April 2012, Human Race was acquired by Nick Rusling (formerly MD at IMG where he oversaw the London Triathlon as well as the launch of Blenheim, Barcelona and the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon). Via Nick’s business Participate Sport and his fellow investors the newly merged Human Race became a leading event organiser in the UK and beyond.
With 20 months of transition into the new ownership under the bridge, where Rusling and Lunt worked closely to continue to develop Human Race, John felt confident that his Human Race creation is now in good hands for the next era. He therefore decided now was a good time to leave and look for fresh challenges.
Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race said “It has been an honour and privilege working with John over the past 20 months. He is a legend in the industry and a greatly respected figure, he’s personally inspired 1,000s people to get fit and healthy over the past 25 years.
“His passion is infectious and there are many people remaining in the organisation who have shared many experiences with him and are well placed to continue his vision and inspiring 1,000s people in the future.”
John Lunt said “It has been a fantastic journey with Human Race; after 24 years it’s now time for a new challenge. With my experience of delivering events, brands and marketing, I would now like to help others in the exciting business of multisport and the development of events.
“I can also now spend a bit more time developing the St Lucia triathlon..! I wish Human Race continued success well into the future.”
