PPD Beach2Battleship triathlon adds Medical Center 5K to race weekend

The PPD Beach2Battleship triathlon has added a new event, the New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) 5K, to its line-up of race weekend events.

As a companion race to the PPD Beach2Battleship Iron and Half Iron Distance Triathlon, the organisers note that the new 5K provides an expanded opportunity for participation in a world-class event weekend, offering athletes a scenic, fast and flat 5K course. The NHRMC 5K will be held Saturday 25 October 2014.

The annual PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon, now in its seventh year, is produced by Set Up Events and benefits the Wilmington Family YMCA. The event welcomes more than 2,000 athletes and their families to the mid-Atlantic destinations of Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach. Recognized as one of the top five triathlons in the world by readers of Triathlete magazine, the 2014 event will take place Saturday 25 October.

“We are pleased to partner with New Hanover Regional Medical Center to offer this exciting new event,” said Dick Jones, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Wilmington Family YMCA. “The NHRMC 5K will attract another segment of our community, engaging them in a healthy activity and the excitement and festivities that surround the PPD Beach2Battleship finish line downtown. This weekend is about promoting fun, fitness and health, and the NHRMC 5K allows the celebration to be even bigger and better.”

“As part of NHRMC’s mission to promote the health and wellness of our community, we are proud to partner with The PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon to offer a new 5K race event,” said Jack Barto, President and Chief Executive Officer of New Hanover Regional Medical Center. “The NHRMC 5K will broaden the weekend’s appeal by encouraging individuals of most fitness levels to participate.”

David Simmons, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PPD, said “As title sponsor of the PPD Beach2Battleship triathlon, we welcome NHRMC’s expanding leadership role in the exciting events of race week. NHRMC’s sponsorship of the new 5K adds a terrific new dimension to a world-class athletic competition and exemplifies the strong relationship between our two organizations and our shared commitment to improving health and saving lives.”

The point-to-point 5K will start at Legion Stadium, run along the streets of Greenfield Lake and downtown Wilmington, and end at the PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon finish line on Water Street.

The 09:00 start time for the 5K allows runners to see off triathlete friends and family in the main race, then race the NHRMC 5K and watch the bike and run portions of the triathlon.

The NHRMC 5K benefits the Wilmington Family YMCA. Walkers and families are welcome. Registration is US$25 before 1 September.
