Green light for new Brighton and Hove Triathlon in September 2016

A new event for the thriving UK triathlon marketplace has been confirmed today, as Brighton’s Economic Development & Culture Committee have given approval for an international triathlon combined with a free sports expo/show. The new event will take place in September 2016 at Hove Lawns on the seafront of the City of Brighton & Hove on the south east coast of England.

The Brighton and Hove Triathlon will cater for up to 3000 participants, and will offer a selection of events and distances from Sprint to Olympic to suit all abilities, from first time triathletes to elites. There will also be the ever popular scootathlon for youngsters aged 4 to 8 the day prior to the main race.

The Brighton and Hove Triathlon’s transition area will be at Hove Lawns to give a wide safe transition zone. The event starts with a sea swim, followed by a closed road looped cycle section along the flat and wide A259 coast road and ends with a run along Hove Promenade, taking in some of Brighton and Hove’s famous iconic landmarks.

The Brighton and Hove Triathlon’s delivery team will be led by John Lunt, the London 2012 Olympic triathlon competition manager and one of the most experienced triathlon event organisers in the UK.

“The Brighton and Hove Triathlon is set to be one of the most exciting and eagerly anticipated inaugural triathlons in the UK. Our aim is to make Brighton an iconic must attend event,” said Event Director John Lunt.

There will be a large Sport and Fitness Show sitting alongside the triathlon over the same weekend. Free to enter, the show is for sport-loving families and fitness enthusiasts. The Sport and Fitness Show will ‘bring together the widest range of sports and fitness activities, health and nutrition brands, sporting equipment, clothing and technology in one fun event.’

According to Brighton and Hove based organiser, Lisa Clayton, “More people than ever before are taking up sport to improve their fitness, push themselves physically and mentally; and they are having a great time doing it. We’re capturing this incredible enthusiasm with a well-timed, exciting event that will show people what’s new and happening in sport.”

Councillor Alan Robins, Deputy Chair of the local Economic Development and Culture Committee, said “Brighton & Hove has an excellent reputation for hosting high profile sporting events and a triathlon will be a welcome addition. The event will encourage enjoyment and participation in sport as well as attracting competitors and spectators to the city.”

He continued, “We’ve had great recent successes with events such as the Brighton Marathon and the Tour of Britain cycle race and we are looking forward to the Rugby World Cup 2015 this autumn. The city is known for celebrating and welcoming new events of this kind.”
