One of the UK’s leading sports medicine specialists – and physician to TeamGB over the last five Olympic Games – has been appointed to lead the clinical team at The Gloucestershire Sports Injury & Exercise Medicine Clinic, in partnership with Nuffield Health, in time for its launch in February 2015.
Consultant Dr Rod Jaques will join the new Gloucestershire Sports Injury & Exercise Medicine Clinic, based at Nuffield Health’s Cheltenham Hospital in Gloucestershire, UK. This is seen as an important appointment for the private hospital, allowing clinicians and patients to gain access to advanced new facilities and enabling the medical team to focus on caring for ‘active’ people requiring specialist treatment for sports injuries and problems, who could benefit from exercise treatments.
During the last 23 years, Dr Jaques has built an impressive track record as a national sports medicine specialist at the Gloucestershire Sports Injury Clinic at the Winfield Hospital in Gloucester. The appointment comes at an important time for Nuffield Health, where Dr Jaques will lead the new multidisciplinary team of clinicians with his significant experience following senior positions including Director of Medical Services at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) and a sports physician at five summer Olympic Games.
Originally from Cheltenham, Dr Jaques’ key objective is to provide a premium service for private patients from Gloucestershire and the surrounding area requiring specialist treatment at the new unit.
The new centre has been created following a major refurbishment programme at the private Cheltenham hospital, which will offer patients a 21st century approach to sports medicine. The centre’s aim is to accurately diagnose exercise related problems, find the right rehabilitation route and follow patients through to full recovery.
Patients can also be seen who wish to maximise their sporting fitness performance. The new centre will cater for both amateur and serious sports people alike, combining physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, all rehabilitation services, podiatry, nutrition, psychology, hydrotherapy and diagnostic services; the ‘one stop-shop’ allows for a seamless service from consultation through to scans, x-rays and the rehabilitation gym, all within one system.

It’s important for active people to ensure they seek treatment at the earliest stage of their injury, in order to prevent further damage.

With the increasing knowledge of the benefits of exercise, to both mental and physical well-being, the clinic’s staff will also help prescribe safe exercise regimes in people with chronic disease such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, arthritis and obesity.”
