Electric avenue: e-bikes driving export business for Taiwan

Overall, road and mountain bikes were the main types of bicycles exported from Taiwan during the first quarter of 2018, reaching 159,000 units and 221,000 units, respectively. Compared with the same period in 2017, road bike exports decreased by 2.7%, while mountain bike exports increased by 8.78%.

Taiwan Bicycle Industry Export Statistics point to overall bicycle exports (excluding e-bikes) of 740,000 in the January to April 2018 period. This is down 11.8% year on year, with the biggest declines – for both volume and value – coming from exports to the UK.

Potential anti-dumping tariffs announced by the European Commission on 3 May 2018 upon Chinese exports ranging from 80% to nearly 170% per manufacturer suggest that ‘Taiwan might supplant China as Europe’s biggest supplier of e-bikes’.

Figures supplied by the Taiwan Bicycle Association (TBA) show that in the first four months of 2018, Taiwan exported 83,000 e-bikes, generating total revenue of US$113 million. Compared to the same period in 2017, Taiwan increased its e-bike exports by 34.35% and its revenue by 55.1%.

With an average unit price of US$588.33 for complete bikes (year-over-year increase of 29.35%), the USA accounted for 22.12% of the total revenue in the first four months of 2018. The EU (with an average unit price of US$444) and NAFTA (US$831) respectively accounted for 53.67% and 25.56% of the total revenue.

Taiwan maintains its strong role in exporting bicycle parts and components: export volume generated revenue of US$424 million from January to April 2018.
