World Bicycle Relief is celebrating the collective efforts of all participants in the Rapha Black Friday Ride on 27th November.
Rapha encouraged cyclists to ‘swap the shops for the drops’ on Black Friday and get on their bikes instead to support World Bicycle Relief. 162,624 people from across the world took part in the challenge hosted on Strava, ultimately smashing Rapha’s target of 1,000,000km to reach 2,675,683km collectively cycled in total.
Rides ranging from a few km to hundreds of km in a single day were completed by supporters.
A donation of £120,000 was made to World Bicycle Relief from Rapha following the Black Friday Ride as the 1,000,000km target was reached. Participants also donated an additional £12,300 to the global non-profit that empowers people in developing countries with bicycles when they took part.
£120 is the cost of producing one ‘Buffalo Bike,’ a purpose-built bicycle made for everyday use on challenging terrain. These bicycles enable people to conquer the challenge of distance, achieve independence and thrive — whether students attending school, doctors providing their patients with treatment or workers getting their goods to market.
Since 2005, World Bicycle Relief has delivered 532,000 life-changing bicycles, trained 2,455 mechanics, and helped to give communities across 21 countries the lasting support they need to change their world with two wheels.
