ÖTILLÖ, the Swimrun World Championship in the Stockholm archipelago of Sweden is the original race of the sport of swimrun. The 15th edition of the race, taking place on September 6, 2021, will see 160 teams from 21 nations racing in pairs.
The athletes will trail run and open water swim for 75km across the archipelago. The event will decide the 2021 swimrun world champions in the following categories: women, mixed and men.
According to the event organisers.. ‘It is a gruelling, spectacular race, known as one of the toughest one-day races in the world.’
ÖTILLÖ, meaning ‘island to island” in Swedish, has become one of the most respected endurance races in the world. The course is hard and long. Technical trails, slippery rocks, and cold, sometimes rough swims with a lot of current are all part of the demanding course of 65km of running and 10km of swimming, over and between 24 islands in the Stockholm archipelago.
The internationally growing swimrun movement saw its birth in 2006 when ÖTILLÖ was conceived after a bet in the bar between four friends. The format of alternating running and swimming on a natural course has grown to a new popular sport, swimrun, that is building momentum around the world.
With a year’s halt due to the global pandemic, and races cancelled in 2020, the event team adds that… ‘competitors are hungrier than ever to give it all they got to fight for the swimrun world champion titles on Monday 6 September.’
