3D Terrain View on Strava Global Heatmap

Strava has released 3D Terrain View on its Global Heatmap. This is a new way to view the Global Heatmap and see the terrain the Strava community covers in ‘realistic, high-def view’.

Athletes who frequent mountainous or varied terrain – hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers, skiers, etc. – can use the new feature to preview, plan and relive their adventures by ‘seeing where their communities explore most frequently.’

Strava adds that it is on a mission to enhance all of its maps, and this includes building 3D capabilities where possible.

This is a web-only feature update. The Global Heatmap is available ‘Zoomed Out’ even without a Strava account. Subscribers can toggle between their Personal Heatmap in 3D vs the Global Heatmap.

This year, other Maps updates from Strava include:

  • In April, Strava added 3D Terrain view to Personal Heatmaps (part of a subscription – visible on web only).
  • In May, Strava began using MapBox maps for the record screen on mobile. This allows for athletes to toggle on the Global Heatmap layer on their record screen map (available to all athletes – including non-subscribers).
  • In June, Strava updated the Maps tab on mobile, bringing all Segments and Routes into one place. It also launched Segment suggestions: personalized recommendations to help athletes plan the kind of run or ride they want.
