Map revamp: 3D Terrain Mode option for Strava subscribers

Strava has added a subscriber-only 3D Terrain Mode option for personal heatmaps. This web update marks Strava’s first 3D extension of maps, helping athletes reflect on the experience from their activities.

Strava subscribers can check the new view out on their Personal Heatmap by heading to Dashboard > Heatmaps on the web. Users toggle the new 3D map from the sidebar, and then watch the hills rise up from the normal flat view for a more immersive way to remember activities.

  • Zoom in or out, or change the angle by holding ‘control’, clicking and dragging the map
  • The 3D view works with every map layer, but it’s best paired with the satellite or hybrid map.

Additionally, Strava recently released two smaller map updates:

  • Satellite map upgrades: satellite map imagery has been updated across all of Strava’s surfaces, including Routes, personal heatmap, and activity uploads – on mobile and web alike. These new satellite images are, on average, from the last two years or newer, and provide more accurate context and more seamless exploring from place to place and across zoom levels.
  • Map updates on record screen: The Strava app record screen map (previously Apple Maps on iOS and Google Maps on Android) has been updated to be Mapbox on both platforms. Strava adds that this ‘provides a consistent map view across all of Strava’s surfaces.’
