Challenge Cancun, in conjunction with the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council and the Municipality of Benito Juárez, has confirmed the progress of the event’s second edition, slated to take place on May 2, 2021.
Challenge Cancun, billed as ‘the best medium-distance event in the Mexican Caribbean’, has announced that, after a year of uncertainty and date changes due to the global health crisis, the event is now close to its maximum participation quota.
In 2019, Challenge Cancun debuted in the Mexican Caribbean as a sports tourism destination event. It offered competitors and their companions the attractions and services the area has become known for over the years.
The organising team noteds that the event’s second edition will further focus on the quality of service and attention that characterizes this destination, by ‘implementing all sanitation and security measures and protocols in all event locations as well as with its staffing.’
‘Likewise, many of the main players in the tourism sector of Cancun, such as the Hotel Association, the Cancun International Airport, and tourism service providers have come together to make this event one to remember.’
The turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean Sea at Playa Langosta beach will once again witness 1.9km of swimming, followed by the cycling route running along Bonampak and Kukulcan Boulevards, with a circuit of laps to reach 90km total distance.
Transition two will be located in the centre of Cancun, where competitors will begin the 21km run route on Bonampak Avenue, completing three laps, and then reaching the finish line located in front of Nichupté Lagoon.
More than 3,000 athletes and companions are expected, ‘many of which are estimated to come from abroad’. Athletes and their supporters will have the experience of staying at Aloft Cancun, the host hotel for the event.
Challenge Cancun 2021 will include ‘800 participants who come from 23 countries around the world to enjoy the destination’. All athletes will receive their goodie bag and transportation to the event site from the hotel.
In the professional category, 45 athletes will compete for the prize purse of US$15,000. Pro athletes expected to attend include world-renowned and Olympic champions such as Javier Gomez Noya, Michael Weiss, and Saleta Castro.
