A news report by Reuters is citing a class action lawsuit against Trek and its Bontrager WaveCel helmet. According to the report, the helmet product, launched in 2019, was allegedly marketed with false claims about its safety.
Bontrager is Trek’s cycling accessories brand. The Bontrager WaveCel Helmet is billed as ‘a major advancement in the protection against cycling-related head injuries.’
The company notes that… ‘WaveCel is a collapsible cellular structure that lines the inside of your Bontrager helmet. It’s designed to be more effective than traditional foam helmets in protecting your head from injuries caused by certain cycling accidents.’
Referencing the lawsuit, the Reuters report is entitled ‘Trek used bogus safety claims to market pricey bike helmets.’ The news report states…
‘Bicycle maker Trek Bicycle Corp is facing a proposed class action lawsuit accusing it of falsely claiming that a new line of helmets is much more effective at preventing brain injury than conventional helmets.
‘In a lawsuit filed Thursday in Manhattan federal court, New York resident Andrew Glancey said that [the] company’s Bontrager WaveCel helmets, introduced in 2019, were marketed with false claims that they were “up to 48x more effective than traditional foam helmets in protecting your head from injuries caused by certain cycling accidents” in order to command a higher price.’
