WHOOP 4.0 is the latest fitness and health wearable from WHOOP. The device monitors recovery, sleep, training and health; and the new 4.0 version is free when individuals sign up for a WHOOP 4.0 membership.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the company; having recently raised US$200 million in its latest funding round, in early September WHOOP also confirmed the acquisition of strength & conditioning app PUSH.
Current WHOOP members with six or more months left on their membership will receive a free WHOOP 4.0. For those who have fewer than six months remaining on their membership, WHOOP asks that this is extended, for the company to send the 4.0 for free. Version 4.0 device requests can be done through the WHOOP app.
New members will receive a free WHOOP 4.0 when signing up for six months or more.
As with the 3.0, version 4.0 is free with a WHOOP membership, starting at US$30/month. Although, with the launch of the 4.0, WHOOP is also offering a new membership option called WHOOP Pro.
For an additional US$12 per month (or €12/£12) the WHOOP Pro add-on gets users 20% off WHOOP Store items. The Pro add-on also offers free shipping and returns on every purchase, early access to new releases, and one free accessory item per quarter. So, every three months Pro customers have a choice of free band, battery pack, WHOOP Body apparel, WHOOP Pro gear, and more.
Pulse oximeters & skin temperature
With its new LED configuration, the WHOOP 4.0 now has the ability to monitor blood oxygen levels (SpO2) with pulse oximetry. Although most common pulse oximeters track this from a finger, the WHOOP 4.0 uses the same technology to calculate on the wrist.
Version 4.0 is also equipped with a skin temperature sensor to provide users with… ‘another layer of knowledge regarding your body’s readiness to perform. It builds a personalized baseline for your own skin temp and alerts you to any daily variations.’
Along with the two new metrics listed above (SpO2 and skin temperature), the 4.0’s Health Monitor feature displays live heart rate, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and respiratory rate, providing key vitals all in a single place.
If any of these stats stray too far from a normal baseline range, the Health Monitor lets the user know via a colour-coded system (green, orange, red) that something could be amiss. Additionally, the Health Monitor creates downloadable PDFs of 30-day and 180-day trend reports that can be shared with a trainer, coach, or physician.
Any-Wear Technology
Seen as a first step in making wearables invisible, WHOOP Body with Any-Wear Technology enables users to wear WHOOP 4.0 in a variety of different places on the body.
Two WHOOP Body apparel collections are being released:
- The Training Collection features sports bras, compression tops, leggings, shorts and athletic boxers
- The Intimates Collection also includes bralettes and everyday boxers
Within each WHOOP Body garment there is a discrete pod area that the WHOOP 4.0 sensor slides into, to capture all data away from the wrist.
Device features
- The WHOOP 4.0 is 33% smaller than version 3.0, but still has the same 5-day battery life as the 3.0.
- The new wearable has four times the number of photodiodes on the sensor and five LEDs that use green, red, and infrared light for new metrics and increased data accuracy.
- A spinning motor creates vibrations to provide haptic alerts and expand the functions of WHOOP’s Sleep Coach.
- Version 4.0 is the first product worldwide powered with Sila’s silicon anode battery materials, which deliver a claimed 17% higher energy density than the 3.0.
